LED Carpet Lights the Way to Informative Flooring
Tuesday 19 November 2013People spend a lot of time looking at smartphones and signs to find their way from point A to point B. But what if you could just look down at the carpet under your feet and see illuminated directions, like an objective marker in a game? Philips and carpet-manufacturer Desso have teamed up to make LED flooring a reality.
According to a press release, the two companies are partnering to create light-transmitting carpet--smart flooring capable of displaying all kinds of information.
"The technology takes advantage of people’s tendency to be guided by the floor when moving through and interacting with space," said Philips Lighting's Ed Huibers. "It brings information, direction, inspiration, and safety via the carpet you walk on."
Directions and safety are great, but let's cut to the chase: when can we play a giant game of Frogger on our living room carpet? Add in some motion-sensing technology like Kinect, and you could have fully interactive rooms--make it happen, Philips.
