Bats see red over Dutch street lights
Thursday 23 August 2018In an environmental coup, the Dutch town of Nieuwkoop has installed street lights throughout the town to protect its rare species of bats. And the end result is streets bathed in red at night.
The town is located next to a nature reserve which is home to the threatened species, and it would seem that red light is right up their street. They don’t see it as bright – if they even see it at all. Interestingly, the lights offer the same illumination overall as typical LEDs, and the human eye quickly adjusts to the colour.
The town is the first in the world to adopt the technology, and environmentalists hope that others will see the light.
